Definitions

National Park

Land set aside by Congress to protect outstanding natural and cultural landscapes. Managed by the National Park Service, these areas prohibit resource extraction and prioritize preservation and public enjoyment.

National Monument

A presidential or congressional designation protecting areas of historic, prehistoric, or scientific interest. Monuments can include archaeological sites, natural formations, and landscapes of significant public value.

National Forest

Federally owned forest land managed by the USDA Forest Service under a multiple-use philosophy — allowing timber harvesting, grazing, recreation, and watershed protection in balance.

National Grassland

Prairie and range lands administered by the Forest Service, primarily in the Great Plains. Established after the Dust Bowl era to restore degraded agricultural lands, they support livestock grazing and wildlife habitat.

National Historic Landmark

Properties officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as nationally significant in American history and culture. NHLs represent the highest level of historic designation, above the National Register of Historic Places.
